Burial figures left in the tomb of the dead to serve as servants in the afterlife.
All my Egyptian artifacts were legally exported from Egypt prior to the 1970 UNESCO treaty, and my policies comply with all international trade laws regarding antiquities. Every item is legally and ethically acquired, coming from old American and European collections, museum deaccessions and auctions. Provenance is not always listed in every item description due to restricted space, but is provided on the certificate of authenticity that accompanies each item. Enjoy!

New Kingdom Egypt. 20th Dynasty, 1185-1070 BC. Large wood ushabti, from a very old and notable collection. Depicted mummiform, standing on rounded plinth with crossed arms. The wood is a very dark brown, stained and with traces of the bitumen coating that once covered it when buried with a mummy. H: 15cm (5 7/8”). Ex collection of H. Ryder Haggard, author of "King Solomon's Mines" and "She", collected by him in Egypt, ca. 1900. #PV014: $1250 SOLD

Ancient Egypt, Late Period, c. 664 - 343 BC. Nice blue-green faience ushabti. Mummiform, with false beard, arms folded across chest, hands holding a pick and hoe. H: 76 mm (3"), with nice detail! Ancient Egypt. New Kingdom, 19th to 20th Dynasty, c. 1292 - 1077 BC. Excellent terracotta ushabti, depicted mummiform, wearing tripartite wig with curled locks, arms folded across chest, hands holding pick and hoe, basket at center of back. The paint is well-preserved with red-brown skin tone, yellow horizontal stripes down the length of the body and black wig, cosmetic details and vertical column of text down the front. H: 6 5/8" (16.8 cm). Intact, and extremely well preserved. Stand not included. Ex Nomis Antiquities; ex Simian family collection, Switzerland, formed in the 1960’s. A superb and tcranslated Egyptian Polychrome Ushabti for Wah-Smen, 'Illuminate, the Osiris, Wah-Smen, [the one who] lays down the record.' An attractive example of a mold-formed pottery ushabti covered in white pigment and accentuated with areas of red and black. The figure stands in mummiform with fused legs and three yellow 'bandages,' holds a black-painted pick and hoe in arms crossed atop the chest, and has a seed bag painted on the verso. The peaceful visage exhibits almond-shaped eyes with elongated corners, a slender nose, full lips, and a tapered chin, all beneath a black tripartite wig with lengthy lappets and a white fillet wrapped around the middle. When translated, a black hieroglyphic inscription down the legs reads, ""The Illuminate, the Osiris, Wah-Smen, [the one who] lays down the record." For a stylistically similar example for Tamakit, wife of Khonsu, please see The Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 86.1.26. Another stylistically similar example, of a smaller size, hammered for $7,500 at Christie's, New York "Antiquities" auction (sale 3403, December 11, 2014, lot 56). Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Julian Bird collection, London, UK, acquired between 1970 and 2012. Minor nicks and abrasions to legs, body, and head, with chipping and fading to areas of original pigmentation and hieroglyphic inscription, softening to some finer details, minor pitting, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and nice traces of original pigment throughout. #AE3358: $1500 |

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic Period, c. 664-535 BC. Very large faience ushabti. Depicted mummiform, arms crossed, holding pick and hoe. Vertical register of heiroglyphic inscription of the Book of the Dead down front. The green glaze now turned brown. Weathered surfaces, likely from flooding in the tomb over the millennia. 15 cm (6 inches) tall!
