Ancient Rome, c. 1st - 3rd Century AD. A neat bronze votive amphora, with two small loop handles, wide body and constricted neck. Bent and a bit battered in antiquity, leaving quite a large indented hole in the back side. Still quite lovely from the front. Olive-green patina with heavy earthen deposits. H: 2 1/16" (5.2 cm). Ancient Roman enameled bronze seal box, c. 2nd - 4th Century AD. A nice example, the lid decorated with concentric circles within a diamond-shaped area with remains of yellow-gold enamel. L: 1 1/8" (2.7 cm). Intact, hinge still moves! The seal was box was a uniquely Roman device used for protecting documents and other smaller items. A string was wrapped around a bagged item or through a latch and tied to the back of the seal box, which was then filled with wax and impressed with the ring seal or stamp seal of the owner. Roman Egypt, c. 1st - 3rd Century AD. Great Egyptian gold and bronze loop from the Roman Period. The core of heavy bronze over which sheet gold has been hammered. 32 x 26mm. Few areas where the bronze core has been exposed. A neat piece which may be a form of jewelry or perhaps a loop for a larger composition. Ancient Rome, c. 1st-3rd century AD. A fantastic and rare Roman bronze "palm thimble." Most commonly used by sailmakers and leather workers. It was tied around the hand and tucked into the palm, and used by setting the eye end of a needle against the recessed end, and pushing the needle using the entire arm. This allowed the sewer to use a great amount of force without hurting the hand while pushing a thick needle through tough materials like leather, canvas or sail cloth. Ancient Rome, c. 1st century AD. Fantastic intact pair of gold earrings. Each formed from one piece of gold wire, in hoop form, with coiled loop end on one side, and small hook at the other. These could still be worn with a little professional modification! Each measures about 15x16mm, weigh 1.7 grams between them. Ancient Rome, c. 1st-3rd century AD. Fantastic bronze chariot fitting depicting the bust of Mars, the god of War. He is shown wearing cuirass and tunic, gazing upward and to the right. His helmet once was adorned with a crest, lost in antiquity. This was likely a chariot element, the remains of the iron rivet still attached to the back. The Pantheon, Ancient Rome! 1st-2nd century AD. A large iron nail / spike taken from the Pantheon over 200 years ago. Comes from a very old collection, found in an old Italian photographer's envelope that had the following written on it: "A nail picked up or taken from wood work of the Pantheon, Rome - 1809". The Pantheon is a temple in Rome first built by Agrippa during the reign of Augustus, then re-built by Hadrian around the year 126 AD. Nail measures a whopping 134 mm (5 1/4") long and is square in construction with a pounded-flat squared-off head. The envelope comes with it. #AR2166: $525 SOLD

Silenos was the early Roman god of wine-making and drunkenness, and adoptive father/tutor of the wine god Dionysos who had been entrusted to his care by Hermes. Silenos was the Roman god of musical creativity, prophetic ecstasy, drunken joy, and dances. He is depicted as a satyr, with goat-like attributes, wild beard, and pierving silver eyes. Roman fishing-net tool with Biblical relevance!
Ancient Rome, c. 1st-2nd century AD. Bronze fishing-net mending tool, the same type used by Jesus’ disciples. Similar tools found near Galilee, Israel. See Matthew:4 in the New Testament, Verses 18 to 22 describe the calling of the first four fishermen, who become his first disciples: two, Simon Peter and Andrew, were casting a net into the sea, and two, James, and John, working with Zebedee their father, were repairing their nets. The disciples abandon possessions and family to be what Jesus calls "fishers of men". For type, cf. Roman Britain, c. 2nd-3rd century AD. Great bronze lion-head fixture. Once was attached to a chest or other large item of furniture, with a bronze ring through its mouth as a handle. Three rivet holes (one clogged with earth) held it onto the chest. The front cleaned, the back with the original heavy earthen deposits. Huge, thick, hunky chunk of Roman bronze inscription. From a massive piece of bronze, probably an important plaque, sign or city gate item. About 2 inches across and 1/4 inch thick. It is twisted and torn, indicating some incredible force from antiquity befell it. Perhaps when the city gate was torn down by invading Vandals or Goths... something major and incredibly powerful. The letters are quite large (the "A" is 3/4" for reference). There is not enough there to tell what exactly it once said but you can see the inscription from across the room! Ancient Rome, c. 3rd – 4th Century AD. Large and impressive Roman bronze serving bowl with a decorative disk attached to the bottom. The disk is decorated in repoussé and depicts pairs of deities in square vignettes, Athena and Artemis at left and Apollo and Artemis to rt., above are head of men and women within oval frames, below two additional squares with vine motif, and additional facing and profile heads within oval frames. To right an image of a seated goddess was added after the fact, the corner overlapping one of the square containing vine motif. Several of the portraits within oval frames contains inscriptions in Greek as does the scene with Artemis and Athena, with YΓIA above, which also appears before a bust at the upper right hand side. EVT-VXI appears before several of the busts as well. The rim is flat with a beaded border and the raised disk foot decorated with concentric grooves.
Dia: 10 in (25.4 cm); H: 2 1/2 in (6.4 cm). A most attractive and interesting piece with deposits and mineral encrustation throughout. Ex Christie’s London, purchased in 1983. #AR2539: $3500

Ancient Rome, c. 1st - 2nd Century AD. Attractive terracotta figure of a Sothic dog, resting on a low bench. Modeled in the round, head facing with tail curled underfoot. The dog wears a collar with a circular pendant, a bulla, but the collar itself is not indicated. The tail is bushy and the face is nicely detailed. The bench is of two layers, the two front legs with lion’s foot terminals. Minor loss to left ear, earthen deposits. H: 4 1/8" (10.4 cm); L: 4 1/4" (10.8 cm). The Sothic dog of Isis was connected with the dog star Sirius, the heliacal rising of which marked the first day of the year and the coming of the yearly flooding of the Nile (the inundation). Pompeii!
People always ask me if I have something from Pompeii and until just now the answer has always been "No". But I just acquired a couple small mosaic fragments from a late 1900's collection, found at Pompeii. Enjoy!

Mounted on a mirrored backing and attached to a large pottery shard, presumably from Pompeii as well, the entire display measures 4 1/8" x 2 5/8".
