MASSIVE Ancient Celtic / Balearic lead sling-bolt. 1st century BC. Massive 46 mm (1 3/4") and very heavy (83.75 grams)! Flat on one side due to the weapon having been crudely "field cast" where an impression was made in clay or sand and the molten lead poured in. Roman armies used proper mold-cast lead shot, but when in the field it was not uncommon for slingers to cast their own. Not having the materials, time, and inclination to build real molds, they would simply dig an almond-shaped depression in a suitable medium, and pour molten lead into it. Deep gray-brown patina. Ex Northern California private collection. A great display piece! #AR2657: $125 SOLD
