Ancient Roman Egypt, 3rd Century AD. A rare ceramic oil lamp, the discus featuring Eros (Cupid) seated cross-legged, beside him is a shattered amphora. Made of dark red-brown micaceous clay. A fantastic little Roman bronze oil lamp!
Ancient Rome, c. 1st-2nd Century AD. A small bronze oil lamp, with a wide fill hole and flat discus, small nozzle and crescent-shaped handle. Three intact loops once suspended this lamp from chains (lost to history). L: 3 inches. Except olive-green patina. Intact save for a few small holes due to age. Isis on a Roman Lamp!
Ancient Roman, c. 2nd century AD. A rare and exceptional ceramic oil lamp depicting the Egyptian goddess Isis! The goddess is depicted wearing solar-disc headdress, seated on a throne, holding the infant Horus in her lap, fifteen raised pellets surrounding. With a rounded body, small loop handle, and short spout which still shows charring from use in antiquity! The base is impressed with a maker’s hard depicting three grain ears. Old collection tag on underside. See Bailey Q2021 and Loeschcke Type VIII for similar variants. L: 3 3/4”. Handle repaired from 2-3 pieces, otherwise intact! Ancient Rome, c. 2nd - 3rd Century AD. Clay oil lamp decorated with the bust of Jupiter atop an eagle with spread wings, radiating lines in the fields. The shoulders are bare and the nozzle is short with rounded tip, an impressed notch where the nozzle joins the body. Mouldmade, central disk, with fill holes to either side of the mask, recessed within a tall border which runs along the spout to the wick hole. Outward sloping shoulders with two raised knobs. An interesting Roman orange-ware lamp from Egypt, c. 3rd Century AD, ovoid in shape, with indented central discus containing an image of a winged Erote, depicted nude and holding a sword, a shield and other armaments at his feet. The shoulders are adorned with raised dashes, the stump handle with four ridges running the length and extending onto the underside, which possesses a flattened base. 3 1/4" x 2 1/8" (85x55 mm) and very thick. Ancient Rome, 2nd Century AD. Wonderful Roman ceramic discus oil lamp with an eagle. The bird is well-detailed and stands left, head to right. The discus is deeply concave with small fill-hole and set off by grooves and ridges, the nozzle short and round and the ring handle with two vertical ridges. Roman North Africa, c. 4th-5th Century AD. Red-ware terracotta discus lamp with a large Chi-Rho (Christogram) depicted in the discus. The shoulder is decorated with small impressed lines and circles. Though the nozzle is lost, we can see that a channel would have run between the disc and nozzle, edged by ridges. There is a maker's mark on the underside in the form of a Silphium seed. The seed takes the form of the traditional heart shape and was used in antiquity as a seasoning and medicine. Silphium was also an important trade item for the North African city of Cyrene, which may place this lamp as being made in the city of Cyrene. L: 3 7/8" (10 cm). North Africa, 5th century AD. Redware oil lamp depicting a scene from Daniel 3, 13-18. The Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar is seated on the left, commanding the Three Hebrews to worship his image. He points to a bust upon a column before him. The Hebrews are shown wearing short pleated tunics with hoods over their heads. Ancient Rome, Central Italian, c. 175 - 225 AD. Attractive Roman terracotta oil lamp with a fish and maker's mark. The lamp is mold made with circular body and short rounded nozzle, heart-shaped on its upper surface, a ring handle at the rear. The angled shoulder is separated from the discus by a substantial single molding, a central filling hole with air vent below. On the discus, a nicely detailed fish. North Africa, 5th century AD. Large redware oil lamp fragment depicting a scene from Daniel 3, 13-18. The Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar is seated on the left, commanding the Three Hebrews (Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego) to worship his image. He points to a bust upon a column before him. The Hebrews are shown wearing short pleated tunics with hoods over their heads. Large 12 x 8.2 cm (4 5/8” x 3 1/4”), with great red color and earthen and mineral deposits. cf. The nozzle is rounded, and the ring handle accentuated by ridges; the foot with incised ring around a central maker's mark in the form of a "planti pedis" or human foot. L: 3 3/4" (9.5 cm).
