Coins of Ancient Elymais (Elamais), Ancient Persia / Elam
The people of Elymais (also spelled Elamais) were descendants of Biblical Elam and the Elamites, and likely spoke or read Aramaic, as many Aramaic inscriptions were found in Elymais. A semi-independent state under rule of the Parthian kingdom of Persia from the 2nd century BC through the 3rd century AD, known as a culture of great archers. Their coins depicted a king, and were based on Greek drachms and tetradrachms. The engravers being mainly illiterate, usually only imitating inscriptions on the back of these coins.
