Medieval England, 14th-15th century AD. Pilgrim holy water flask made of lead. Also known as an ampulla, these lead vessels were brought from pilgrimage places as a souvenir. Some scholars have suggested that many ampullae were used in the annual springtime 'Blessing the Fields' ceremony, in which the Holy Water they contained was sprinkled on the ground to give prayer for a good harvest. Others have suggested that the ampullae were buried along with their contents for a similar purpose. Decorated with a fleur-de-lis and floral design on one side, a coat-of-arms on the other. Medieval Haarlem, c. 16th century AD. Great lead cloth seal depicting a sword! One side depicts the seal of the Dutch city of Haarlem: a sword with cross above, stars around, the other side with a cryptic symbol, possibly the number "20". 25 mm diameter, with light grey patina, light earthen deposits. Very interesting! Found in East Kent, England. #AM2085: $250

Medieval Europe c. 10th - 15th Century AD. A rare and large Medieval iron pick-type tool. Formed from a single strip of iron with attachment shaft for a handle, the two narrowing ends twisted in antiquity (possibly why it was discarded in Medieval times). L: 4 1/4 in (10.8 cm). Medieval period. Coptic Egypt, c. 480 - 650 AD. Terracotta souvenir pilgrim flask. Depicts Saint Menas on one side, flanked by camels, his arms outstretched in blessing. Above each arm is a quincunx, representing a cross; all within a beaded circular border. Measures 3 7/8" (10.1 cm) tall. Missing most of one handle, otherwise intact! ref: Bailey, Ptolemaic and Roman Terracottas from Egypt, p. 118, no 3415. Small flasks were probably produced at the pilgrimage center of Abu Mena, south-west of Alexandria, to sell to the devout as a souvenir of a visit. Huge Medieval iron padlock, c. 11th-14th century AD. Still retains both its original mounts - the wooden door rotted away centuries ago. Deadbolt pin still moves inside the mechanism! Doesn't slide all the way out - you'd need a key to do that. Talk about quality craftmanship! Extremely well preserved for iron. Would make a great display-piece! Medieval England, c. 9th-13th century AD. Interesting pendant made from a teardrop-shaped chalcedony stone amulet engraved with a cross. Around it is wrapped a thin bronze setting with suspension loop. Pretty fragile, I would not recommend wearing this. But a very interesting piece!
