Lovely antique bronze cross, c. 17th-19th Century AD. A large piece, probablyonce attached to a larger object, with rectangular open-work base and small intact suspension loop at top. 3 7/8" (97 mm). Byzantine Empire, c. 8th-12th century AD. A nice large Byzantine bronze processional cross, fashioned from sheet bronze with long mounting tang and incised circles for decoration. Crusades-period Europe, c. 12th - 14th Century AD. Fantastic large Medieval bronze attachment with central Crusader cross. The central cross inlaid with pearls, the flat backing with a stippled texture and around the outside chain-like link each with an attachment pin. In 3 pieces but nicely mounted in high quality frame. An interesting item that perhaps adorned a box or piece of furniture. Measures 8.5 cm (3 1/4 in). The frame measures 5 1/8 x 5 1/8 in. Byzantine Empire, 8th - 11th century AD
Bronze processional / ceremonial cross. Once would have been attached to the top of a long staff. Comprised of one large bronze section with two smaller bronze "bars" attached with rivets. Some silvering remains in the details and where a 4-sided silver applique once covered the joints. Fine punched-dot border around the edges. A piece of iron is still attached to the back which would have held it onto its original fixture. 4 1/8" by 3". #2006: $399 SOLD
Byzantine Empire, 8th - 11th century AD
Fantastic and huge bronze processional cross. Engraved with Greek letters "BLA" at top with monogram above, "CA" and "O-" at sides. At center is a circle of 22 punched-dots; another partial circle visible at bottom, where the piece was broken in antiquity. Metal a bit twisted at this point where it was once attached to the longer staff or pole. Nice patina ofgreen to almost purple. A lovely display piece! Measures 6" by 3 1/2". #2013: $399

Coptic Ethiopia. Massive silver processional cross, 18th-early 20th century AD. A spectacular piece! Made of silver, although probably a low-grade silver mixture it has a brilliant "glow" about it. These were made using the lost wax method common to the area during the period. This is a large processional cross, which would have been carried on the end of a long wooden pole during religious processions. The cross measures 16 1/2" tall and is adorned with an angel at the base on one side and four winged angelic faces around the center on the other. The main part of the cross is comprised entirely of a multitude of small crosses. It is a remarkable piece. It has a museum stand that does not quite fit properly - the shaft of the cross is quite large - so it has been "modified" with padding to make the cross stand straighter. This could be adjusted.

A little history on the culture: Following the persecution during the Coptic period in ancient Egypt, Christians moved the church to sanctuary in Ethiopia where it continued to flourish for hundreds of years. It is even said that the holy Ark of the Covenant was secreted away to a church in Ethiopia--and is still secretly guarded there to this day by Coptic priests. #copt7475: SOLD

Front is decorated with punched-dot "Five wounds of Christ" design, the central area showing evidence where a silver decorative element was once attached. Massive Byzantine bronze ceremonial cross with inscription, c. 10th - 12th Century AD. The arms flaring out, each ending in three circular projections or roundels, the middle roundel larger than the two on either side. On the top arm is the name of St. George and the remains of an attachment at the center of the cross indicated there was more than likely an image of this saint. A hole for attachment to a pole or mount at bottom. H: 5 3/8" (13.7 cm). Great green patina with a few pits and two of the smaller knobs with minor damage. Ex Los Angeles private collection. This sort of cross was placed in the sanctuary, behind the altar, or in other parts of the church, and when it was used during services it was probably attached to a pole. Nice! #A13150x2: $650 SOLD

Quite ornate with incised circles for decoration as well as the remains of where a silver or stone inlay once was affixed in the center. The cross sits atop a globe and the entire piece was mounted atop a staff or some other object, likely for processional or ceremonial use. H: 7 1/3" (18.7cm).
