Near East, Islamic Period, c. 7th-9th Century AD. A terracotta ‘grenade’ in the form of a stylized fish. The body of the weapon has a fin-like backside and a small tail, raised and incised bands with rippling decorate the back. The lip is very thick with a narrow neck to tie a stopper. Medieval England, 14th-15th century AD. Pilgrim holy water flask made of lead. Also known as an ampulla, these lead vessels were brought from pilgrimage places as a souvenir. Some scholars have suggested that many ampullae were used in the annual springtime 'Blessing the Fields' ceremony, in which the Holy Water they contained was sprinkled on the ground to give prayer for a good harvest. Others have suggested that the ampullae were buried along with their contents for a similar purpose. Coptic Egypt, c. 480 - 650 AD. Fantastic terracotta souvenir pilgrim flask. Depicts Saint Menas on one side, flanked by camels, his arms outstretched in blessing. Above each arm is a quincunx, representing a cross; all within a beaded circular border. H: 4 1/4" (10.5 cm). Intact with clearly molded impressions on either side. Cf. Bailey, Ptolemaic and Roman Terracottas from Egypt, p. 117, no 3415-3425. The small flasks were probably produced at the pilgrimage center of Abu Mena, south-west of Alexandria, to sell to the devout as a souvenir of a visit. Crusaders, Holy Land, c. 13th -14th century AD. RARE bronze cross-shaped hook, used for spur leather. The cross at center small and flat with squared edges, thin twisted bronze hooked-loop at one end, thicker bronze loop at the other. Glossy black patina. Found in the Holy Land! An incredibly rare find. H: 44mm (1 1/2"). ex Peter Cheremisinoff estate, New Jersey. A spur leather is a narrow leather belt tied around the heel of a horseman. After the introduction of rowel spurs in the 13th century (as opposed to the earlier prick spurs), a system with two belts came into use, one above and one below the foot. The former was connected to the spur via a small buckle, the latter held to the spur terminals by hook attachments like this example. The two belt connection only became common by the mid-14th century, but must have existed in the 13th century. A type referenced by John Clark 1995, reprint 2004: “The Medieval Horse and its Equipment, Museum of London”. #JM2419: $550 SOLD
