Jewish families of the time could not afford an actual menorah in their home, these oil lamps were used instead.


Holy Land. Byzantine period, c. 5th - 6th Century AD. Great ceramic oil lamp. Ovoid in shape with sharp carination, angled ridge around wick-hole and fill-hole, which is also bordered by a ring of vertical lines, two raised circles on spout. The handle triangular with a stylized male head in high relief, ring base on bottom. Some charring still evident on spout from use. L: 4 1/2" (11.3 cm). Holy Land. Byzantine period, c. 7th - 8th Century AD. Gorgeous ceramic oil lamp. Mold-made with tapered shoulders adorned with three horizontal bands containing hatching. The fill-hole is bordered with a tall rim and surrounded by a low channel which also encompasses the wick-hole. At back is a conical handle and on bottom ring base with raised circle within. An early Christian lamp measuring 76 mm (2 7/8") long and is perfectly preserved with clear evidence of use in soot around wick hole. Ancient Egypt, Roman period, c. 4th-5th century AD. Nice terracotta frog lamp. Lentoid in shape, with circular decoration around the body. On base, raised disk with impressed maker’s mark. 3 1/2".
