Ancient Coins and Artifacts from Carthage, North Africa

Beginning in the 3rd Century BC, two symbols rose to preeminence, encapsulating the symbolism of Carthage: The Punic goddess Tanit, and the horse. As such these symbols were used almost exclusively on Carthaginian coins for the most of the city's existence under Carthaginian rule. The patron deity of Carthage was Tanit, who was a celestial deity and the North African equivalent of Astarte. She is depicted wearing a wreath of grain, and the horse on the reverse (or sometimes a horse's head) is part of Carthage's foundation myth. According to Virgil's Aeneid, Tanit told the original founders of Carthage to build their new colony at the place where they would discover a horse's head in the ground. The number of places they tried digging to find such a wonderful treasure is unknown, but apparently they finally found their reward. Gruesome, yes, but a story beloved by many a faithful Carthaginian.
